making sense of the world
Portuguese - Português
Portuguese, like English and Spanish, is a language that began in Europe but has come to have far more speakers in the Americas. Brazil has the world's fifth largest population, second in the Americas, and a rapidly growing economy. A strong culture of social media in Brazil and Portugal helps makes Portuguese the fifth most used language on the Internet.
Written Portuguese bears considerable resemblance to its neighboring Spanish, though the pronunciation of the two is quite different.
Portuguese has the verb conjugations that complicate all Romance languages as well as many contractions that make some Portuguese constructions a bit more complicated to decode, and there is considerable difference between the varieties found in Brazil and Portugal.
Reflecting its widespread use online, Portuguese is a high priority for Gistology.
